Gerard first came into contact with Buddhism in 1974 when he started learning anapanasati meditation at Wat Buddharangsee in Sydney. In 1975 he began studying Tibetan Buddhism at Chenresig Institute under Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. In 1976 Gerard came in contact with Zasep Tulku Rinpoche and studied and meditated under his guidance for 27 years.
In the course of his instruction with Zasep Rinpoche Gerard also studied and practised Zen and Vipassana quite extensively.
Gerard was a Registered Psychologist and was very interested in the considerable overlap between therapy and the spiritual psychology of Buddhism.
Gerard’s main teaching and practice was Tibetan Buddhism within the lineage of Lama Tsong Khapa. Yet in his teaching Gerard also drew from his training and experience in Zen and Vipassana as well as his training and experience in Western Psychology. In 1995 Zasep Rinpoche appointed Gerard as a Dharma Teacher and authorized him to give initiations.
Gerard passed from this realm on 28 October 2003.
