Oud notisen/ Old notes (1970-1994)

The old South African notes (used under apartheid), reflected Afrikaner culture and heritage. The obverse of the notes feature Jan van Riebeck, the Dutch explorer who founded Cape Town in 1652. The notes contain the following text in Afrikaans and English:
 

Ek beloof op aanvraag te betaal aan toender te Pretoria
I promise to pay the bearer on demand at Pretoria

The notes' reverse contain images portraying the South African economy -- the chemical industry (R2 note), the mining industry, upon which South Africa's wealth is built (R5 note), the agricultural industry (R10 note), an image of van Riebeck's ship with the South African Coat of Arms (R20 note) and images of South Africa's native fauna (R50 note).The Coat of Arms bears the Latin inscription "Ex Unitate Vires" -- "Unity Creates Strength" ("Eendragt maakt magt" in Afrikaans).
