The Gizo Kindy is at the bottom of a hill in Gizo. Indeed, the first Kindy was accidentally built in the path of a road, but later moved even though the then Government offered to deviate the road around the building! Unfortunately, the torrential rain frequently led to floods, as can be seen in the picture. This flooding inevitably invaded the Kindergarten, closing it each time. A generous donation from the European Union Development Fund has helped solve the problem. The EU
is also assisting with roads and
sanitation projects in other parts of the Solomons as well as new wharves.
The EU donation has enabled the building of a protective wall. Now, you or I might build such a wall OUTSIDE the Kindy, however the innovative locals have built a wall INSIDE the building! This was recently completed and works very well. It also provides a seat all around the inside of the Kindy. Ramps have been constructed at the doorways, with steps down into the Kindy. Two torrential downpours have been totally excluded by the wall.
