Australia and World War One

VELS Level 6 the Humanities – History

Introduction

World War 1 (The Great War) was a significant milestone for recently federated Australia. It confirmed Australia’s continuing relationship to empire; provides evidence of a robust political culture in and around the conscription debate and provided the young nation with its most enduring myth.
In Australia and World War One, students evaluate the significance of World War 1 by:

  • reflecting on Australia’s wider relationship to the world
  • analysing democratic values, including liberty, equality and responsibility
  • examining the war’s historical, social and political context
  • understanding the importance of referendums as a process of constitutional change
  • analysing a range of primary sources, including photographs, speeches, songs, slogans, pamphlets and statistical data
  • developing strategies in brainstorming, questioning and note-making
  • researching and presenting a point of view on a significant issue
  • understanding the importance of context, audience and purpose in presenting a point of view
