Cutting Bevels

Handy Hints

ADD A FENCE AND PLATFORM TO BELT AND DISC SANDER

The belt and disc sander may be used to sand edges of thin timber to an exact 90 degrees so that it may be joined perfectly to another piece of timber, and it may also be used to cut bevels at any angle.

This photograph shows the fence (top of picture} and the platform (bottom of picture} which have been bolted to the belt and disc sander.

It is essential that the fence be exactly 90 degrees to the belt of the sander, and that the platform is exactly parallel to the belt.

A scrolled piece of timber is held against the fence and sanded to the required size. An edge will then be perfectly square.

This photograph shows the fence and platform from a different angle.

Note that the fence is 90 degrees to the belt and the platform is parallel to the belt.

There is a 45 degree bevel guide attached to he platform, with a scrolled piece resting in position. The scrolled piece is being bevelled at 45 degrees. This piece is held firmly by hand and gradually lowered onto the belt sander. Constant checking is necessary to ensure that bevel is straight and that it is bevelled to the correct size.

This photograph shows how the bevel guides are constructed so that they may be clamped to the platform.

Bevel guides can be made quickly to bevel any angle required: 10, 12, 30, 45, 55 degrees - any angle at all.

The bevel guides are attached to the platform with strong clamps.
