OUR GREENING PROJECTS

In 2011 we applied for a grant from the NSW Government to install water tanks to try to conserve water. We were successful in gaining funds to complete this project. We also installed high rating toilets and taps throughout the centre.

In the children's playground we installed a tank for access with water play. The children have learnt that the rain fills up this tank and if you use all the water they have to wait until it rains again before they can have water.

THANK YOU TO COLES FOR OUR GRANT

Our wonderful Secretary -Lis Evans  placed a submission to Coles for our centre to receive a Greening Grant. From this grant we purchased 3 raised planter boxes, gloves and tools for the children and some mulch and garden products. Thank you Coles for helping us with this project.

In the future we will establish a worm farm and a frog pond in our playground.

BUNNINGS VISITS OUR CENTRE.

We contacted Bunnings  Belmont who also donated one more planter box, various plants for our project as well as soil and staff time. Bunnings staff then visited preschool On Friday the 14th October to help us begin our planting project. Take a look at  our photos from this day. Thank you Bunnings for your kind donation and community support.

2012 Sustainable Projects

When we retuned from preschool holidays we had some vegetables growing. The plants needed to have a drink so we used the watering can that  Harry made for us to water them.

Some of our plants had died over the holidays (see above picture) so we purchased more plants to  grow. Cheryl puts on the garden  gloves on the children  and begins teaching them how to plants the new vegetables and herbs.

Using the garden tools to make holes for the new plants.

Even the big shovels were used here.

The children notice that the corn plant also needed more soil as it's roots were exposed at the bottom. So they filled up the bucket and brought soil over to the pot where together the children lifted the bucket to pour the soil in.

They spread the soil around so that it covers the plant very  well.

Official Garden  Open Day and Thank  You

On Wednesday the 14th March we held our Official Garden  Open Day to thank Coles/ Land Care for our garden grant.

We welcome Mel O'Hara to preschool. Mel is the Manager at  Coles Belmont and our local project officer. We were able to personally thank her for Coles' contribution to our grant. I also want to thank Lis Evans for the organisation of the Open Day and for her fruit platter and drinks.

We invited parents , staff and children  to our open day.

Water Tanks

Our water tank near the dirt pit can only be used after rain. We are teaching the children that if they want water play they have to  conserve their water . We have been placing buckets in the playground to collect water and then we tip it all in the large bucket.

We listen to the sound of the water in the tank and tap on the tank to measure where the water level is up to.
