why rnb?
Our twenty-first century western culture provides many of us with long life expectancy and a high standard of living to enjoy. Why not devote ourselves to maximising our pleasure?
But maybe just pleasing ourselves will not make us as happy as we think? Perhaps life has a higher purpose, that will be more fulfilling to us than living just for ourselves?
The pace and pressures of postmodern life and the nature of postmodern culture leave little time to stop and wonder what it all means. rnb is an attempt to swim against this tide, in the hope that others will join in the discussion and the questions.
So on rnb we attempt to look at the big questions in life. I try to outline the breadth of opinion on the different topics and provide material (including references to follow up) that allows you to come to an informed opinion. There are quick summaries plus a more detailed discussion of each main topic and supporting material. There is also a forum, to provide the opportunity for other opinions to be heard.
But of course I have my own views, and these undoubtedly colour my choice of topics and the way they are presented. In summary, I believe life has a purpose, I believe in God and I try to follow the way of Jesus. For a personal statement of why I believe these things, see (...link coming soon...). But I do not believe in much of modern institutionalised christianity, and I do not believe in trying to argue people into any belief.
who's responsible?
Written, designed, coded and ©2006, 2007 by Unkle E, with a lot of help from the people below.
Unkle E (aka Eric Hatfield) lives in Sydney, Australia. He is married with three children who are, fortunately, more mature than he is. He has worked in environment protection, enjoys contemporary music, and has a keen interest in ethics and beliefs in our 21st century culture. He has a sneaking suspicion that the world will end before his footy team, the Cronulla Sharks, will ever win the competition. He believes in God, tries to follow the way of Jesus and believes people should be free to follow their own beliefs. He thinks the humorous qualities of cows deserve wider recognition.
