Biography

Born in Sydney, Australia, Margaret Morgan studied law and literature at Macquarie University. She practised as a solicitor for four years, before leaving the profession to write full-time.

She has worked as a freelance journalist, critic, script editor and writer of television drama, including "A Country Practice", and "GP" for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and recently, "Water Rats" for the Nine Network. Her short stories have been published in literary journals, including Meanjin and Going Down Swinging, An Anthology of Contemporary Writing.

As a librettist, she wrote with composer Andrew Ford the song cycle "Harbour", commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra for tenor Gerald English, which has been performed in Sydney and at the Huntington and Adelaide Festivals. "Harbour" is now available on CD from Tall Poppies Records TP128.

In 1995, Morgan and Ford's one man music theatre piece, "Casanova Confined", was performed by Lyndon Terracini and directed by John Wregg with the Sydney Metropolitan Opera in Sydney and at the Barossa International Festival of Music in South Australia.

In their most recent collaboration, Morgan and Ford wrote a music theatre work specifically for acclaimed tenor, Gerald English, "Night and Dreams: the death of Sigmund Freud". A production of Music Theatre Sydney and directed by George Whaley, "Night and Dreams" premiered at the 2000 Adelaide Festival of the Arts, played to full houses at the Sydney Opera House at the 25th Sydney Festival, and was featured at the Melbourne Arts Festival in October 2001.
