Soccerwhos?
Thursday, June 29th, 2006Well, I know its a bit late, and everyone’s forgotten about what happened last Monday night, but I went down to Birrarung Marr (who the fuck came up with that name? Surely there are easier aboriginal names to remember than that) with Jase and met up with Bianca. We were planning to go to Fed Square, but it was closed by the time we got there at 11pm, but it didn’t really bother us too much ‘cos the atmosphere was pretty awsome down by the Yarra. The excitement could be felt in the air walking there, with the hugh crowd converging on Flinders St.
In the first half, we had a fantasic view of the screen, and as the match went on the crowed became more confident of a win. After half time some tall guys stood in front of us restricting my view to about 1/3 of the screen, but that was balanced by one of the Italian players getting a red card. With Australia continually pushing forward, it seemed to be only a matter of time before we scored. However, in the 93rd minute of the match, the unthinkable happened…
The crowed went totally silent, hoping that it was a mistake. Everyone had there hands over their faces, trying to hide from what had happened.
I’d never seen so many people in the city at 3:30am on the walk back to Jase’s. I was quite surprised that the city wasn’t trashed, ‘cos everyone seemed so pissed off.
