• Entertainer: Musician. Ken spent about 20 years on stage as a keyboard player/vocalist during the sixties and seventies in many rock and roll bands in the Sydney area.
Ken learnt piano from a very early age. He thought it was a natural thing because his father,Sidney Lloyd Hambly, played piano, violin and banjo and it seemed so easy to him.
There was always a piano in the family home. 60 years later, it is still here!
Ken soon found out it wasn't as easy as it looked. . His first piano teacher that he remembers was Mrs Freeman in Greenwich Rd , Greenwich. His mother drove him to lessons every week, after week, after week. His next teacherwas Mrs Pogson of Rosevilleand. By this time Ken was at High School at Hurlstone Agricultural High School, Glenfield. It was a fair bit of travelling, but Ken went from Lane Cove, (Artarmon Station) to Glenfield and back, every day, by train, about 2 hours each way, and then went on to Roseville once a week for piano lessons. Mrs Pogson succeeded in bringing Ken to AMEB level 6 and his yearly examinations were at The Conservatorium of Music, Sydney.
There was a piano in the downstairs gymnasium at Hurlstone and Ken was soon able to imitate the piano sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis.
His first band was called "Wade Peters and the Hellcats". Wade was a friend whose real name was Peter Ward and the rest of the band was made up of 2 brothers playing drums and guitar who lived at Bradfield Park. (Near Chatswood.) Early rehearsals were held in the community halls at Bradfield Park.
