Captain William Lelliott, was on the "Cutty Sark" as well as later captaining the NSW coastal steamers the "Vine", the "Vale", the "Caloon" the "Cobake" & the "Duroby".
He took the the "Cutty Sark" on the English/Chinese tea trade then Australian wool trade & finally out here as a training ship before returning to Greenwich. The "Cutty Sark" is now permanently in the Maritime Museum at Greenwich near London UK.(information from Suzanne MacDougall - descendant)
Family stories from several distant branches all claim that William Lelliott sailed on the Cutty Sark. No documentation for this can be found yet. Even those at Cutty Sark in London (before the fire) were unable to find him mentioned in any of their records, although they don't claim to have complete crew lists for every voyage. --Ken
During the terrible "Maitland Gale" of May 1898, Captain Lelliott's ship was demasted whilst trying to reach the Hunter Valley which relied on ships for food and provisions. He cut away the rigging himself and struggled on to the Hunter. He was awarded a commendation for this brave act, in the form of a scroll. (Location today unknown) (information from John Paterson - descendant)

"Dad did not get on well with his step mother Martha. At age 12 he ran away from home to work in horse racing stables. At 14 he started as an apprentice jockey, obtaining his jockey licence in 1914. He joined the army in 1915, was sent to the Middle East and then to France, where he was wounded and gassed, afterwards finding himself in hospital in London. He returned to Australia by hospital ship, spending some time in Lady Davidsons Home in Turramurra, the doctors telling him he would not have long to live. He proved them wrong, didn't he. In the early 1920,s (I'm not sure what year) he went to Emmaville for a holiday to an army friend and after a while feeling a lot better, decided to move there to live. He borrowed money from repat and bought a model T truck running it between Glen Innes & Emmaville but he broke down in health and had to go back to a tpi pension. We moved to Glen Innes in 1933 where dad bought a barber shop. Again health beat him and he had to return to the pension.

General Notes: "Archie was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1932. It was during the depression and he had been coming home with some fruit and vegetables in the sidecar. Swerving to miss some pedestrians he came off his bike (no helmets in those days) and fractured his skull. The fruit and vegetables were strewn across the road. He was taken to Prince Henry Hospital at Little Bay (La Perouse). Despite being three months pregnant with her last child Alan, Ollie stumbled over 3 miles along tram tracks in the dark, often falling and cutting her hands and knees.
On arrival at casualty they thought she had been attacked but she said no, she was there to see her husband. Archie died that same night, never to see his fourth child born.
Archie's brothers Ernie and Gordon took up a collection (for the widow and children and to cover funeral expenses) from people in the Woolahra area and even held a benefit night, but Ollie never saw any money because they spent it all at the pub!" --Janine Copper. 19
Archibald married Edna Olive Lee, daughter of Thomas Lee and Frances (Fanny) Young, in 1930 in Randwick District, Sydney, NSW. Edna was born in 1896 in Sydney, Australia 58 and died on 21 Nov 1978 in Maroubra, NSW, Australia 32 at age 82. Another name for Edna was Ollie.
General Notes: After the death of her mother, Fanny, her father, Thomas, remarried. The new wife threw out all Fanny's personal effects. The children did not like her at all and she sent all of them to live with different relatives. Ollie was sent to live with Sam and Eva Freeman. (Eva was Fanny's half sister, Eva Wing from Mary Doyle's second marriage to Chow? Chui? Que? (Gang?) Wing, i.e. Ollies aunt. There she was mistreated by one of the servants, Hildebrick, who would swing her around by the hair and call her "charity brat".
Another of the servants always had a strange smell. After running her a bath one day, Ollie went in to see if she was all right, only to find her beside the bathh fully clothed splashing the water with a stick!
When Ollie was old enough (about 16) she rented a house and gathered her brothers together again. She was the only girl and so acted as mother to them all. She worked for a Jewish couple, the Dawsons, who were very good to her. They paid her for cutting out, sewing up and stuffing dolls.
In 1920, when she was 24, Ollie married Leonard (Len) Foy, son of Thomas and Adeline Foy of the Mark Foys family who owned large department stores. Sadly he died in 1924 of wounds suffered from World War I. He was shot in the leg, which became very oedematous (swelling due to infection). He developed a venous aneurism which the doctors found too difficult to repair.
After he came home from the war, he and Ollie were very well off, having nice furniture and clothes and a lovely house. The Saturday newspaper would often report what Ollie, "Mrs Len Foy", was wearing at the Randwick Races that day. Len was a jockey when he was in his teens. He trained in India with his own private staff to see to his needs. After the war he found work as an ambulance driver until his leg became bad.
During his time in the army Len acquired a very colourful record, often having to forfeit several days pay for offences ranging from being AWOL to using "inappropriate language to a superior officer" and being drunk and disorderly.
In 1930 Ollie married Archibald Lelliott, a friend of Len's who had promised to look after her if his friend died. They had 4 children. Esme, Keith, Leonard and Alan.
Archie was as tall (6'2") as Ollie was short (4'11") ; she only came up to the second button of his waistcoat! Ollie had very long hair and Archie would brush it by the hour. Frances, her mother, died when Ollie was only about 10 years old and she grew up surrounded by mostly male members of her family. So naοve was she that when giving birth to her first child, Esme, she had no idea of the process involved and thought that the mid-wife would cut her to get the baby out!! This was quite strange considering her grandmother was an accomplished mid-wife. Her husband Archie also had no idea of the procedure and when he saw that she had been shaved he was shocked too.
In 1940 Ollie went on to become a volunteer at Prince Henry Hospital, (the well-known "Mrs Lell") when Alan (youngest son of Ollie and Archie) took ill at the age of 7 and was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease. He was hospitalised for long periods and had no strength in his arms and legs. The doctors doubted that he would ever walk again. Esme was saving up for her wedding dress (this was during the depression when there were "coupons" for everything instead of money). However she thought nothing of giving the "money" to her mother Ollie to buy a horse and sulky for Alan so that he could get around as he still could not walk very far. Instead Esme bought a second hand dress from Peggy Melling who lived up the road.
In the sulky, Alan would drive some of the local boys to work at Hughes Woollen Mills and wait around to drive them home again, all the while watching what they were doing. One day the boss offered Alan a job inserting needles into the knitting machines; he took it without telling his family. Imagine the surprised looks on their faces when he bought them all lovelyChristmas presents. His mother thought he might have been involved in something illegal!!
Ollie went on to work at Prince Henry Hospital firstly as a volunteer and eventually as a pathology laboratory aide. Her job was to wash then sterilize blood collection bottles. (no disposable tubes then) and laboratory glassware. She also got all the Pathologists and technicians their lunches and coffee! "mrs Lell" was a well known figure around both Prince Henry and Prince of Wales Hospitals. Even when her paid duties came to an end (she worked well past her 70th birthday) she could be found as a "pink lady" working in the op shop or selling raffle tickets in the foyer. Her daughter, Esme, also worked at both hospitals for many years in X-ray at Prince Henry Hospital and eventually in children's ICU at Prince of Wales. She exalted the wonderful world of pathology to her grand-daughter, Esme's daughter, Janine, who eventually began training as a Medical Laboratory Scientist many years later. Janine worked in Haematology as well, the same department that Ollie had.

Edna Olive was pregnant with Allan when husband Archibald was killed in a motorcycle accident. 1932
Children from this marriage were:
+ 44 F i. Esme Olive Lelliott was born about 1925.
+ 45 M ii. Keith Harold Lelliott
+ 46 M iii. Donald Leonard Lelliott was born in 1930.
+ 47 M iv. Alan Lelliott 34 was born on 3 Jan 1933 in Sydney, NSW and died about 1974 in Murdered in Mackay Qld 60 about age 41.
27. Gordon Gilbert James Lelliott (James19, William James (Captain)17, James11, Richard1) was born on 9 Dec 1909 in Woollahra, Sydney, NSW, Australia 33 and died on 15 May 1992 in Maroubra, NSW at age 82. Another name for Gordon was Jim.
General Notes: Gordon was a passenger in the sidecar of the motorcycle when an accident killed his brother Archibald.
Military Service: Number N213671 WW2 enlisted Paddington Sydney.
Gordon married Edna Olive Lee, daughter of Thomas Lee and Frances (Fanny) Young, in 1942 in Paddington district, Sydney, NSW, Australia.
Founded 1938
Founder Harry "Tiger" Edwards
Headquarters Woolloomooloo, Australia
Harry's Cafe de Wheels is a pie cart located in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on Cowper Wharf Road, near the Finger Wharf and Fleet Base East of Garden Island Navy Base, opposite the Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel.
Three other Harry's Cafe de Wheels operate in Wharf Road, Newcastle, Capitol Square, Haymarket, and the recently opened Liverpool site.
They are best known for offering the dish of a Pie floater.
History
Harry "Tiger" Edwards opened the original caravan cafe, named simply Harry's, near the gates of the Woolloomooloo Naval Yard in 1938. He served with the AIF in World War II, during which time the cafe was not operational. The cart re-opened upon his return from the war in 1945.
The name Cafe de Wheels came about because of the requirement from the city council that mobile food caravans had to move a minimum of 12 inches (30 cm) each day. The cart has been moved by the city council five times over the past 55 years, and is now back at its original spot. Local legend tells that the name was temporarily changed to Cafe de Axle at one point when the wheels were stolen.
As the years passed, 'Harry's Cafe de Wheels' gained new fame as a tourist attraction. A visit to the caravan became a 'must' for visiting celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum and Marlene Dietrich. In 1974, Colonel Sanders stopped at Harry's and enjoyed the food so much that he ate three 'pies and peas' while leaning on his walking stick in front of the caravan. A picture of Sanders taken during the visit still hangs in the caravan today.
Harry's specialises in the same basic food today as was popular back in the 1940s, such as pies and mushy peas. During the 1970s Harry's introduced hot dogs, mostly to appease the American sailors.
In Popular Culture
* Australian singer Peter Blakeley named his 1990 album Harry's Cafe de Wheels with a photo on the cover.
* The cafe was featured in the second season of the reality television show The Amazing Race in 2002. The challenge was for a Fast Forward and the racers had to eat Pies.
