Findings
  1. The array of transformations that result from travel are immense and possibly ‘limitless’.
  2. Sustainability transformations are very difficult, and arguably impossible to determine.
  3. The factors relating to transformation through travel are infinite and highly dependant upon the individual involved.
  4. There are a number of factors that appear to lead to a greater likelihood of transformation after travel. These include:
    • A destination that removes the individual as far as possible from experiences with which they are familiar.
    • Intimate contact with locals; experiencing various aspects of their life and having in-depth discussions.
    • Activities during travel that stimulate in-depth thought about what is being experienced and allow the traveller to extract meaning from their experiences.
    • Post-travel activities in the home environment that allow the traveller to continue thinking about and extracting meaning from issues and ideas that arose during their travel experience.
    • Support for the transformation of ideas and actions within the home environment, particularly from family, friends and colleagues.
  5. The tourism industry should pursue the Sustainability Ambassador concept as a part of its contribution toward the goals of sustainable development.
  6. Future research on transformative travel and the creation of Sustainability Ambassadors needs to be conducted on a smaller scale with a fixed scope, so as to reduce complexity.
  7. Electronic and web-based techniques are a viable approach to academic research, however, they must be selected judiciously and used strategically.
