Setting the Scene

The King’s Head (a Public House) in a village outside of Faversham Kent, May 1648

Upon hearing of Roundhead plans to shorten the doorway of his local public house Pistol and a band of like-minded common folk decide to make a stand. They seize the local public house, The King's Head, and declare for his majesty King Charles

The local lord, Sir Hugh Cholmley, fresh from the Royalist meetings in Rochester sets out for the site of the "rebellion" to join with Pistol and defy the Parliamentarian menace. The Earl of Norwich promises reinforcements should Parliament attack

Parliament, determined to quash the rebellion before it takes hold, immediately despatches Colonel John Burwood with a regiment of foot and horse. They arrive to find the rebels holed up in The King's Head and determined to make a stand.

Action commences at 10:00am with the Royalists arrayed in and around the buildings of The King's Head. The Roundhead force approaches by road from the East.

Will the Royalists be able to hold out until reinforcements arrive, or will the veteran New Model troops crush the rebels?

Objectives and Special Conditions

The Royalists must hold The King's Head for the remainder of the day in the hope that they can escape the better armed and trained Roundheads after dark. At the start of turn 4 roll a d6 on a 5-6 your reinforcements start on the table edge. If they have not arrived, on the next turn they will appear on a 3-6. If they still have failed to arrive they will arrive at the start of turn 6

The Parliamentarians must attempt to destroy the rebel forces as soon as possible. Not doing so before dark will represent a failure in the eyes of the Parliament and Burwood will be replaced.

Darkness is declared as having fallen after a pre-determined number of turns (we suggest 8-10).

Play Hints

Royalists

In the first phase of the game you must use the defending terrain to the utmost advantage in the hope of getting some value out of your clubman. The King’s Head men have unlimited powder so use it. If you can hold out till the reinforcements arrive you have a very good chance of victory

Parliament

You must crush the rebels before the reinforcements arrive or despite your obvious superiority in quality, you will be overwhelmed by greater numbers

General

As with all scenarios with reinforcements arriving at a random time this scenario can produce widely varying results. If required you should change the start turn for rolling for reinforcements or how long the scenario goes

Conceived and written by Michael Mills and Cory Davis. Playtested (often with hilarious results) by the friendly lads at Canister & Grape.
