Why to be a vegetarian or vegan.
1. Environmental Reasons
-
Meat (cattle) requires 14 (wheat) to 66 (soya beans) times as much land
to produce the same amount of protein (i.e. soya beans produce 66 times
as much protein as beef in the same area.)
-
About 100 times as much water is required by cattle.
-
De-forestation. Australia has lost 80% of the forest which it had
when we arrived.
-
Everything that lived in this forest is dead from insects to native animals
(billions of creatures)
-
Oxygen decreases as forests decrease which causes disease.
-
One third of the world's greenhouse gases which cause global warming, the
hole in the ozone layer are from cow excrement.
-
40,000 children die of starvation and easily preventable disease every
day while the food which they could have eaten (grain) has been fed to
cows and the water and land which could have grown food for humans.
-
Each meat eater indirectly consumes enough food to keep 3 people alive.
-
Hoofs of cattle break up topsoil and increase desertification.
-
Pollution of land and waterways and air with excrement and chemicals.
-
Basically meat kills everything, including us.
2. Other Ethical Reasons
-
Factory and battery farms are inherently cruel. eg. pigs whose hoofs have
grown around the metal bars on the floor so that they can never move being
excreted upon by the pigs above them for their whole life, cows having
ovaries removed without anaesthetic, horns cut off, chickens pecking each
others eyes out eating recycled excrement etc. The means of killing
animals is cruel due to their awareness of their impending doom.
-
More than I million male chicks are gassed each day in Britain and more
than 14 million worldwide. These are lucky though compared to the
females who end up in factory farms.
3. Health Reasons
-
Coronary heart disease and cancer are much much less prevalent in vegetarians
and vegans as well as every other disease!
-
Meat has 16 times as much pesticide as the grain consumed and lactic acid,
uric acid, ecoli bacteria, cholesterol, adrenaline hormones, vaccinations,
antibiotics.
-
Our immune system is being weakened by this consumption of antibiotics
-
Men now have only a third as much sperm as their grandfathers (due to pesticide
consumption)
-
Casein (from milk) is the main ingredient of the strongest wood working
glue. There is too much info. for me to express here. Read "Fit for
Life", "Diet for a New America" or contact the vegetarian society.
Some Vegan Athletes
-
Pavo Nuurmi, runner- 9 Olympic Gold Medals
-
Murray Rose, swimmer, 6 Olympic gold medals
-
Martina Navratilova
-
Andreas Kahling (Mr. International)
-
The womens world arm wrestling champion
Some Vegetarians
-
Robert DeCastella
-
Dave Scott (5 time winner of the Hawaii Iron Man Triathlon)
-
Gandhi ('The quality of a nation's people can be measured by the way it
treats its animals')
-
Da Vinci (the statue of David is supposedly the young Da Vinci)
-
Einstein ('even if one only considers its effects on the human personality
this is a sufficient argument for universal vegetarianism')
By being a veg. you will save 18 cows, 11 pigs, more than 1000 fish,
60 chickens, 30 sheep, thousands of litres of water, oxygen, the creatures
that lived in those trees/land, thousands of dollars and 3 people including
yourself
So is it really a good idea to harm every living thing on earth and
in the environment while decreasing your health, increasing your chances
of getting virtually every known disease and wasting money?
Veg's are disproportionately represented, in elite intellectual, compassionate
and athletic areas. Vegetarianism is good for you and for every other
living thing upon earth. By being one you bring the world (and yourself)
a bit closer to complete happiness. What right do we have to kill
another thing so that we can say "mmm that tasted good"? If you would
