Yamaha SR500

E-mail Print PDF

Thank you for looking, however the bike has been sold.

A couple of years ago we imported my wife's Yamaha SR500 from Germany.  The bike has been in storage since, waiting to be tuned and registered.  However, we have run out of time and motivation to get it done, and are offering the chance to an enthusiast to make us an offer to buy and collect the bike.  All offers will be considered.

What is offered ...

The bike is a stock 1986 Yamaha SR500 (48T).  It was imported into Australia, with Vehicle Import Approval, in August 2007.  Prior to this date it was ridden and registered in Germany.  When not in use, it has been stored in a garage excepting for a short period after import, where it was covered under a carport.

Also included:

  • rear luggage rack
  • 2x side panniers with rack.  These are by Hepco & Becker, are lockable and waterproof.
  • Magnetic tank carry case
  • SR500 Repair manual (german language)
  • Lock with 2 keys
  • 2x Wet weather covers for the tank carry case.

About the Bike!

The bike is an SR500 model 48T (VIN 48T004035), 500cc engine.

The seat is in very good condition.

All blinker enclosures are in very good condition.

A couple of photos of the other side of the bike.  The brown marks on the engine are simply the remnants of the dust storm in 2009.

The front and rear tyres appear to be in very good condition, and still have lots of tread left.  The bike has always been stored on the centre stand.  The tyres are Metzeler Perfect ME77.  Top photo is the front, bottom rear.

The bike was prepared for storage by a friend who did the following:

  • loosen clutch and brake cables
  • remove all petrol from tank
  • remove battery
  • fill engine head with oil
  • tyres half deflated

We have not attempted to fix the bike, simply because we don't have the skill.  Hence, it is in the same condition as when we imported the bike.

Known issues or damage

The bike is in good condition, despite its age and storage.  There are some very minor rust spots where the paint has chipped on the top of the fuel tank, but I think these could be easily rubbed out and repaired. Other than that, I cannot find any other instances of rust on the bike.

There are a couple of issues we know of with the bike.

The muffler does not have any dents, but does have a graze on the outside at the very end.  This can be seen in earlier photos.

The accelerator grip is torn, and the rear, left blinker rubber/plastic joiner is split.

The left plastic cover (for the air filter) has a split.  It is still in one piece, but obviously needs gluing. There is a minor chip on the split line just above my fingers.  The mark beneath the SR500 insignia is the remains of a sticker that needs removal.  The speckling in the photo is just dust, and is not apparent on the cover.

The petrol tank has been depressed on the right side.  On the first photo you can see the area just before the seat is depressed.  The next photo attempts to show how much it is pressed in.  There i no chipping on the paint, so I assume a panel beater could pull it out with little or no damage to the paint.

There is also some minor scratching on the gear box immediately behind the rear brake lever.  This is not really visible in the above photo.

Make us an offer!

We don't have the time, and no longer have the inclination to repair the bike.  When it was last ridden, everything worked fine, and the bike was a pleasant ride.  However, it has been in storage and requires some work to get it back on the road and registered.  We have the Dept of Transport Vehicle Importation Certificate to accompany the bike, so it should be suitable for registration.

We live in Orange, NSW (3.5 hours west of Parramatta, 3.5 hours north of Canberra).

If you are interested, make us an offer on the bike.  Any reasonable offer will be considered.  If you cannot collect the bike, we can investigate transport options, but all packing/transport costs will be borne by you.

If you would like further information, or wish to make an offer, either email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or ring 0425 399 468

Thanks for looking.
