In the current trend of re-cycling or re-birthing in the real world it was only natural that in our model world my exhibition layout that had been around for a few years be saved from the scrap heap and re-born.
Armed with note pad and pencil the old 'Grey Matter' started to work overtime and some major decisions were made. Keep the Track Plan, change this, move that, add heaps more lights, fibre optics etc and so the embryo of 'City Lights' began to be formed.
Basically the track remains unchanged, some buildings replaced or relocated and to get the desired effect of Sydney by night extensive use of 12v lighting, LED's, fibre optics and UV fluro tubes combined with fluro paints have enabled us to achieve the desired effect. Trains are powered by conventional Train Controllers while all lighting is powered by four Computer Power Supplies tapping into the 12v & 5v outputs.
Train consists are as prototypical as the State Budget will allow and as usual my 'State Rail Authority' has its share of Derailments, Break Downs and Late Arrivals to explain to the press.
‘CITY LIGHTS’ had its first showing at the 2003 AMRA NSW Branch annual Model Railway Exhibition at Liverpool (Sydney), and was voted the 3rd most popular layout at the show by the public.
