There are many fun activities that you can do with your Jrt. Activities are great exercise and mental stimulation for you and your Jrt, whilst increasing the bond between jrt and owner.
The word Terrier comes from the Latin "Terra" (meaning earth). Many terriers are bred to go to ground and flush out the quarry from its den or earth. Most terriers are not bred to kill the quarry. Earth Dog is for all dogs that were originally bred for to go under ground. Man made tunnels are built and scented for the dogs to test there skills. Dogs can be trained or some just go on their instinct. The dog must pick up the scent trail put down, find the quarry/vermin in the man made dens, and then work (barking, digging, growling, lunging) the quarry. Note: quarry is not live.
**Dog must be registered with the ANKC (Australian National Kennel Club) and Handlers must be a member of the canine controlling body, Dogs NSW for NSW.**
As long as you dog resembles a Jrt it can race! 6 races are held on the day, 100m straight, 100 hurdles and 200m coursing, heat and finals for each. It is a great day for the whole family! Just like grey hound racing, the Jrt’s start in boxes, chase a lure (normally a fox tail), wear coloured racing jackets and wear wire muzzels. The only exception is the majority of Jacks don’t need training! The dog at the end of the day that accumulates the most points is awarded “dog of the day”. The dog who accumulates the most points over the entire year wins “dog of the year”.
This is a great way to have fun, spend time and bond with your little friend. The dog goes through a series of obstacles as fast and precise as possible. Dog must be over 18 months to compete.

Dog Shows ~ Test how you jack rates against others
Dog shows are a place where breeders can show there dogs and see what other breeders are breeding. Dogs are judge on the conformation; how they are built and conform to the standard. Dogs are trained to stand still while examined, walk in a lead at a trot and stand nicely for the judge to observe.
First dogs are divided up in groups
1. Toys
2. Terriers (Jack Russell Terriers are in this group)
3. Gundogs
4. Hounds
5. Working Dogs
6. Utility Dogs
7. Non Sporting Dogs
Then in to breeds and then classes
The main classes offered at shows.
(1) "Baby Puppy" Dog. (1A) "Baby Puppy" Bitch. (3-6 months)
(2) "Special or Minor Puppy" Dog. (2A) "Special or Minor Puppy Bitch. (6-9 months)
(3) "Puppy" Dog. (3A) "Puppy" Bitch. (6-12 months)
(4) "Junior" Dog. (4A) "Junior" Bitch. (9-18 months)
(5) "Intermediate" Dog. (5A) "Intermediate" Bitch. (18-36 months)

(11) "Open" Dog. (11A) "Open" Bitch. (6 months or over)
Judging then works in an elimination process
First choosing best in male classes in the breed. Those males compete for best male in breed aka Challenge Dog or Challenge Certificate aka CC. Same happens to the female classes. Female compete for Challenge Bitch or CC. The female and male CC compete for best of breed aka BOB, to compete for best in group aka BIG and if lucky to best in show aka BIS!
When a dog wins a CC it is awarded points towards champion titles. It receives 5 points for itself and 1 for each dog it has beaten. The BOB dog get the other CC point to as it has beaten the opposite sex dogs too. If a dog wins BIG it is awarded 25 points. 100 points equals an Australian Champion and 1000 points equals an Australian Grand Champion!
Dogs can also compete in there individual classes for best class in breed. They then compete for best class in group and if lucky best class in in show.
