There are two lightweight
purpose designed Tension
( Load ) Cells in line with
the reins. The reins are
of
a high breaking strain and
very flexible webbing that
conforms better than a conventional rein to both the bit ring
and the Tension Cell. This gives improved rein tension measurement sensitivity, negligible hysteresis, and avoids "dead spots"
in measurement due to sloppy rein connections.
The data logger is positioned under the chin and attached to a standard
bridle by a 50mm wide velcro band around the bridle chin straps. This position has proven to be well tolerated, quick to
mount, and reliable.
Just taking tension measurements in reins provides an interesting but limited
story. In order to answer the question "is the rider or the horse pulling ?", an accelerometer mounted inside the data logger could
provide this information.
Quantify communications between horse and rider for Training and Behavioural Science
The Rein Tension meter measures and continuously records the left and right rein tensions close to the bit. Data is recorded using
the versatile 8 channel SignalScribe datalogging system on to a mini SD card typically used in digital cameras. Measurements
could be used for research into equine behaviour,
horse / rider training and
equestrian sport.
