Welcome to Human Gnomon Sundialling

Human Sundials (also known as Sunclocks) are a great fun learning tool for your students. Students learn about the rotation of the earth on its axis and also its revolution in its yearly path around the sun namely night and day and the changing seasons. Sunclocks are widely used both in the United States and Great Britain and I am confident that they will be well received here in Australia also. The easiest and most cost effective way of installing a sunclock is to paint it on the ground either on concrete or on bitumen, usually in school grounds.

The area required is approximately 6 metres long on a East to West alignment and 3 metres long on a North to South alignment on a flat level and sunny area. A lot of students and teachers are both surprised and delighted with the time telling accuracy of a human sundial. In addition, some teachers commented that you could set your watch by it.

A sunclock is best done as a teacher-led project with older students since it needs to be measured accurately, but even younger children in the 6 to 8 year age group are capable of painting a basic layout. All the necessary dimensions, plus instructions are given in our layout plans - which are unique to your location and calculated to the exact latitude and longitude of your location.
